New Roads and Street Works Training

New Roads & Street Works (NRSWA) training we offer is in line with The New Roads and Street Works Act 1991, which places a duty on any person or organisation undertaking work involving the installation, renewal, maintenance or inspection of underground apparatus in any street or road to ensure that work is under the control of competent persons.
This course teaches the skills supervisors need to carry out work to the standards of the New Roads and Street Works Act 1991 – the legal framework for street works.
It is for new roads and street work supervisors who:
  1. locate underground apparatus
  2. set up equipment for works in the highway
  3. carry out excavation, backfill and reinstatement
OR
It is for new roads and street work operatives who:
  1. locate underground apparatus
  2. set up equipment for works in the highway
  3. carry out excavation, backfill and reinstatement

Course Content

You will become competent in the supervision of manual excavation and reinstatement on the highway, including:
  1. Location and avoidance of underground services
  2. Monitoring signing, lighting and guarding; co-ordination procedures and code of practice
  3. Monitoring excavation in the highway; specifications, techniques, road types, materials
  4. Monitoring reinstatement and compaction of backfill materials
  5. Monitoring reinstatement of non-bituminous sub-base and road-base materials
  6. Monitoring laying practices and reinstatement of bituminous materials; specification and types of materials
  7. Monitoring reinstatement of modular surfaces and concrete highways.
or
You will become competent in the supervision of manual excavation and reinstatement on the highway, including:
  1. Location and avoidance of underground apparatus
  2. Signing, lighting and guarding
  3. Excavation in the road/highway
  4. Reinstatement and compaction of backfill materials
  5. Reinstatement of sub-base and road-base in non-bituminous materials
  6. Reinstatement of cold-lay bituminous materials
  7. Reinstatement of modular surfaces and concrete footways

Teaching and assessment

  1. Generally 3 days of training
  2. 2 days of technical tests
The course includes:
  1. Practical tasks and observation exercises
  2. Classroom-based theory including written assignments
  3. Operatives and supervisors learn on the same course to replicate a team environment
